Job Description

Data Tools Engineering Manager

What You’ll Do

  • lead a team that designs and deploys dockerized Java/Scala/.NET applications that orchestrate critical data platforms on AWS and sync heterogeneous data across the world
  • use your experience as a hands-on contributor in the past, to be a sounding board for your team’s technical challenges; and to cover for emergencies if needed.
  • coordinate with the global product manager(s) and other stakeholders to deliver on product deliverables using HomeAway’s established Scrum practices.
  • Ideate on how to efficiently orchestrate multi-region database clusters that run a variety of platforms like Cassandra, Mongodb, Elasticsearch and Redis; and automate the schema and data deployment on these platforms.
  • Help design and build new intellectual property that rival commercial offerings of Oracle etc. in functionality.
  • Focus on Java application development and testing by the Bangalore wing of our team
  • Lead the team’s efforts in growing our client base in other Expedia brands and the open source community.

Who You Are

You’ll fit this role if you have:

  • a B.E or M.E in Computer Science or an equivalent degree
  • management chops, leading a team as a manager in an Agile scrum or similar environment conducting code walkthroughs, peer reviews, and producing technical documentation.
  • a min of 5+ years of Java development (Dropwizard/Spring MVC). Experience managing/deploying Web UI-based products is a plus.
  • strong understanding of multi-threading in Java, knowledge of Maven dependencies and conflict resolution, and unit/functional/integration tests that are expected from every Java developer at HomeAway; expectations on our Managers are no different. You understand common OOP design patterns like SOLID.
  • persisted/cached data skills. You’ve implemented code that uses both relational (MSSQL/MySQL) and non-relational (Mongodb/Cassandra) data stores. You understand the difference between a data store and a cache; and have experience using both.
  • coding and debugging muscle memory, to inspire your team and better their game. Managing mission critical codebases that you didn’t develop, is second nature to you.
  • courage to hold your team to ruthlessly rewriting, refactoring, and perfecting code. You have a solid understanding of code promotion, CI/CD best practices, and using Git for source control.
